Chateau Palmer Margaux 2022 is primarily sourced from dedicated parcels of vines (averaging over 38 years of age) located within the Margaux appellation in the southern Médoc. This cuvée represents a blend of several high-quality climates, drawing fruit from approximately fifty-five hectares of vines growing on magnificent gravelly soils with quartz stones of varying sizes, which provide an exceptional combination of heat retention and drainage. This vintage is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. The estate is managed with a philosophy of minimal intervention, and this cuvée is crafted with the same meticulous attention to terroir as the world's most sought-after wines, utilizing 100% biodynamic farming (certified since 2018) and a gravity-led cellar to ensure the gentlest possible handling of the fruit. It was aged in French oak barrels (with a proportion of new oak, and uniquely, a second year of aging in large oak foudres) to preserve its fresh, vibrant fruit character and minimize the impact of the wood.
This is one of the great estates of this famous village. Thomas Duroux has had a huge impact on the development of the domaine since he took over as director in 2004, leading the transition to holistic viticulture. Purity and clarity of style are the hallmarks here, with an essence of exuberance, but somehow also restrained fruit showing how Margaux can be so intense yet delicate.
Tasting Notes: These wines are juicy and charming in youth though always age worthy. Delicate, perfumed and intense. And true to form, here in 2022, we are presented with a wine which is high-toned, lifted, and superbly pure. This Chateau Palmer shows pretty blackberry, blueberry, crème de cassis, and violet aromas, backed by perfumed sweet spice, licorice, and that classic Margaux silky, velvet-like minerality. Full-bodied with powdery tannins and complex flavour profile with a long finish.
Serving Suggestion: Pairs best with robust dishes such as roast lamb, grilled beef, duck, pigeon and game. Rich pasta dishes with mushrooms or truffles and hard, aged cheeses.
