Domaine Jouan Chambolle-Musigny 2022 is primarily sourced from dedicated parcels of old vines (many over 70 years of age) located within the Chambolle-Musigny appellation in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. This cuvée, crafted by Philippe Jouan, represents a blend of high-quality climates that epitomize the village's reputation for elegance and ''feminine'' grace. This vintage is a blend of 100% Pinot Noir. The estate is managed with traditional and minimal-intervention practices, and this cuvée is crafted with the same meticulous attention to terroir as the domaine's grand cru holdings, often incorporating a small percentage of whole bunches (up to 10%) to enhance aromatic complexity. It was aged in French oak barrels (approximately 30% new) to preserve its fresh, vibrant fruit character while adding a refined, silken texture.
Domaine Philippe Jouan is a tiny estate of just over 3 hectares. Previously the family sold a lot of wine to négociant, Joseph Drouhin, but are now bottling most of the wine themselves under their own label. Philippe took over from his father, Henri, and has a well-deserved reputation for making fruity, charming wines which look balanced and ready to enjoy at an early stage. There are some impressively old vines at this estate, and this Chambolle is blended from separate small plots of vines: Derrière le Four, Herbues and Chardanes (80, 70 and 50 years old respectively). This wine is rich, deep and succulent yet remains fresh and elegant, without any jammy/confit flavours. There is a clear house style, but there is a great terroir expression too.
Tasting Notes:
''Philippe Jouan's 2022 Chambolle-Musigny is an excellent wine, offering up a deep and sappy nose of plums, black cherries, and violet petals with a touch of chalky soil and cedary oak. On the palate, the wine is pure, elegant, and quintessentially Chambolle, revealing a lovely, sappy core of fruit and fine-grained tannins. It is a luminous and buoyant expression with a long, complex, and very classy finish that punches well above its village weight.'' Score: 91 — John Gilman, View from The Cellar, November 2024
Serving Suggestion:
Pairs best with robust dishes such as roast duck or slow-cooked lamb, mushroom risotto and cheese dishes.
