Forecourt Operation

The Fuel Station is open to Costco members only. For more information on Costco membership, please visit our Membership page or call 01923 830477 (Terms and conditions apply - Membership is available to qualifying individuals aged 18 years and over).

Costco's approach to fuel is the same as inside the warehouse - high volume and low prices. One-way traffic makes it easier to get in and out of our stations quickly.

Our extra-long hoses allow fueling from either side of the vehicle, so there is no need to be concerned with which lane to choose.

The Fuel Station is entirely self-serve, with pay-at-the-pump technology. We accept Chip & PIN debit cards (UK Maestro, Visa Debit), and all forms of Chip & PIN American Express. We do not accept any other credit cards.

When fuel is purchased with a Chip & PIN card, Costco requests a £99 pre-authorisation amount before beginning the fueling process. This pre-authorisation ensures that Costco will be paid for the fuel dispensed.

After the fuel is dispensed and the transaction is completed, Costco sends a notification message to the card issuer with the actual transaction amount. It is the responsibility of the card issuer to follow the AFD (Automated Fuel Dispenser) process to reverse the amount that was pre-authorised and deduct only the actual amount for the fuel purchased, as shown on the receipt.

In theory, if the card issuer is following the correct procedure, the £99 pending amount should drop off shortly after the transaction is completed and be replaced with another pending transaction for the actual amount dispensed.

From time to time, you may see a pending amount of £99 on your statement for longer periods due to an error with processing by the issuing bank this typically drops off between 3-5 working days although this can vary between card issuers.

Please call the customer service number on the back of your card if you have questions or concerns.

Cash or cheques are not accepted for payment. Eliminating the need for a cashier means a shorter wait for our members.

When a customer scans a membership card the system reads the barcode/membership number on the card and confirms the membership is active (American express cards also serve as membership authorisation for the pump). Only members with valid membership cards may purchase fuel at Costco.

Types of Fuel and Fuel Quality

Regular Unleaded (95 octane), Premium Unleaded (97 octane) and Premium Diesel.

Octane is a hydrocarbon that is part of all fuel. Octane ratings/numbers are a measure of a fuel's ignition properties under compression. This is expressed as a reference to the same properties of a form of octane.

There are several ways in which the octane rating can be measured and/or calculated. In the UK the Research Octane Number (RON) is the most commonly used value.

Octane Rating is a measure of how the fuel burns in your engine. Too low an octane rating can cause knocking - also known as pinking, which over time can harm your engine. Knocking results when the fuel pre-ignites in the cylinder, ahead of spark plug ignition. Higher octane rated fuel controls this pre-ignition.

Costco advises that you use the octane rating specified in your owner's manual.

Costco adds the same levels and formula of fuel additives to both unleaded petrol grades we sell.

There are two aspects of fuel quality which depend on the fuel brand and the individual retailer: deposit control additives and forecourt maintenance.

Deposit control additives:
Every grade of Kirkland Signature™ Fuel contains deposit control additive that keeps your engine protected and running like new.
Variations in deposit control additive formulations are the main difference between brands of fuel. Kirkland Signature™ Fuels have been proven to clean deposits and restore dirty engine components to like-new performance.

Station Maintenance:
Good station operation and maintenance means the fuel is filtered and that contaminants, such as sediment and water, do not find their way into our members' vehicles. Costco fuel stations are well-maintained by our capable attendants so you may be confident that the fuel going into your car is clean.

Costco uses fuel filters in the petrol pumps to catch particles or debris larger than 10 microns in diameter. For comparison, the average human hair is seventy microns thick.

Costco uses ethanol-compatible filters designed to catch sediment, water, or phase-separated ethanol and water mixtures.

Costco's electronic sensors continuously monitor our underground storage tanks for water.

Costco buys fuel from refineries and distributors across the UK. All Kirkland Signature™ Fuel is fully guaranteed, just like the merchandise we sell inside the warehouse.

To comply with the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RFTO) order and European legislation, a certain amount of ethanol may be blended with British Standard petrol (BS EN 228) and biodiesel with British Standard diesel (BS EN 590).

Costco advises that you consult your vehicle owner's manual to determine the suitability of these fuels for your vehicle.

Safety

Costco fuel stations have an outstanding safety record. All our fuel station attendants have passed the UKPIA Forecourt Contractor Safety Passport Scheme and are qualified to work in a fuel station. Our attendants work outside on the fuel islands, so they are always available to respond to any emergency. Every Costco station is equipped with automatic shut-off mechanisms both above and below ground. All our stations have a dedicated 999 emergency phone and conventional fire extinguishers on every fuel island. Fuel is highly flammable, and we ask for our members to comply with all applicable laws and signage regarding safe refueling.

No, you must be aged 16 years and over to operate the pump. Children should not pump fuel or get out of the car during the refuelling process, Costco fuel stations are very busy and children are often below the level of drivers mirrors. Costco fuel station attendants are available to assist anyone who requires additional help in filling their tank.

The Chief Fire Officers Association prohibits any potential ignition source, including cigarettes and running engines, while refuelling.
The Chief Fire Officers Association code is adopted and enforced by local fire officers/authorities around the country. To comply, all Costco fuel stations feature prominent signage advising our members of these rules. All Costco attendants are instructed to enforce these rules at our fuel stations.

There is a small but real risk of static electricity sparking a fuel vapour fire at any fuel station. To prevent a static discharge from igniting fuel vapour, always touch your car with your bare hand to discharge any accumulated static energy. If you re-enter your car during refuelling, you may accumulate another charge from your vehicle upholstery. Static may be discharged by touching the car or some other metal surface, away from the fill point, each time you exit your vehicle at a fuel station. The shock you feel is your protection!

Static electricity can also accumulate on portable containers transported by a moving vehicle. Accordingly, only approved containers can be filled with fuel, and they must always be removed from the vehicle and placed on the ground before filling. This "earths" the container and eliminates the static risk.

Mobile phones do not produce sufficient voltage to start a fuel vapour fire. Despite rumours, erroneous emails, and general confusion surrounding this subject, there have been zero confirmed fires caused by mobile phones anywhere in the world.

While the use of a mobile phone will not cause a fire, there is a very real concern that talking on a mobile phone at a fuel station can cause an unrelated accident if you are inattentive to the fueling operation. For your own safety and the safety of those around you, please refrain from using your mobile phone while refuelling at Costco fuel stations.

Containers must be fit for purpose and conform to the Petroleum-Spirit Regulations 1982 and Petroleum Regulations 2014.

The Regulations state that petrol can be stored in the following containers: Plastic containers up to 10 litres / Metal containers up to 20 litres.
