Appearance: bright and clear dark garnet
Nose: Intense aromas of port wine jelly, dark chocolate, liqueur cherries, mulberry and perfume notes of violet and lavender. Lovely cedar hints in the background
Palate: On the palate it is a kaleidoscope of red liqueur cherry, satsuma plum, mulberry and dark chocolate laid over a length of silk and a firm but gentle grip of tannin. Lovely acidity and a subtle anise oak note on the finish.
2021 was one of the cooler vintages in Margaret River and those who have collected the wines over the years will know that some of their most legendary wines have come from cooler years, vintages such as the 1990, 2000 and 2015. The time from flowering to harvest was 140 days – 3 weeks more than normal – allowing for superb complexity and ripeness to build as the fruit reached full ripeness. The final blend is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.
Matthew Jukes published his full 100 Best Australian Wines Report for 2025 with the first quote below being from this report. Of the 9 digital reports that are available, going back to 2014/2015, the Moss Wood Cabernet has been included 8 times which is a pretty impressive near 100% hit rate. It's rare for a wine to feature so consistently in his report.
