The Cally 40 year old 1974 vintage is part of Diageo's Special Releases 2015. A limited edition, natural cask strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky from Caledonian, a closed Edinburgh distillery. This is the oldest Caledonian ever released by the original distillers. This whisky is quite out of the ordinary, one of the most individual whiskies you could taste and makes for an excellent apéritif.
The nose is filled with sweet fresh fruits; peach, ripe melon and a spirited top-note of zesty orange peel. Background aromas include vanilla sponge, with a hint of fresh-planed oak.
The Cally is lightly sweet and oily on the palate, with smooth chocolate and vanilla, dates, a spicy warmth and a slightly bitter pungency emerging on the mid-palate.
The finish is long and complex. Oily, with a fine coating of dry dark chocolate and fresh oak-wood. A rising pungency offers espresso coffee and charred notes of treacle toffee and chocolate cake.
